Caceres province, Extremadura, Spain: near the Batan ricefields and Galisteo lake, Riolobos and Portaje reservoir. A typical roadside bar but with traditional Extremaduran cuisine, home-made, and with a good quality/price ratio.
The menu on weekdays costs 8€ and there is a 12€ menu on festivals and holidays. There is an a la carte menu which comes to 20-30€ per head. Standout dishes are the roast piglet (cochinillo) and bacalado dorado (a Portuguese dish of flaked saltcod, scrambled eggs, shredded potatoes and onion). Among the desserts, the most famous are the tarta de queso (cheese tart) and tarta de hojaldre (puff pastry tart).
