CAMPING CASTELL MAR
Recommended by Lonely BirderStrategically located within the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park, less than 15 minutes from the Cap de Creus Natural Park and 30 minutes from the Massís de l’Albera Natural Park. Right next to the campground there is a small colony of stilts. At the beach there are Kentish plover nests and less than ten minutes away at the Tec and Pericos Lagoons you can find bitterns, flamingos, anatidae, waders and different surprises during migration season. This is one of only two campgrounds with the Lonely Birder Approved hallmark (the other is camping Castell Montgrí) thanks to the director, Jordi Sargatal who is one of the main people responsible for the fact that the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park hasn’t become a memory buried beneath tons of concrete and asphalt. Little by little this campground has integrated itself into the surrounding nature, bringing the fauna to its visitors through nest boxes, ponds, bird feeders, etc. The employees of this veteran campground are so dedicated to the cause that they guarantee mud for the house martins that breed in the area and refuse to aggressively prune the mulberry bushes that shade the plots to ensure that they provide fruit for the birds. From the bedroom windows you can see the cliffs where a good selection of the park’s raptors breed. There is a wide variety of hides for photographing birds in different habitats like bird baths, carrion feeders, bird photos of perched birds, ponds, rivers, etc. The meals try to include as […]

With 20 years of experience, this accommodation started out as a simple lodge for crane birdwatchers. A few years later they added on to the existing structure to accommodate more than 50 people in double rooms. The owners’ dedication and commitment has converted this place into something more than just a rural inn. With 113 points and 5 feathers it’s almost impossible to find criteria that the Allucant doesn’t meet. The library is very extensive, the walls are filled with bird paintings and photographs, they sell souvenirs, the views of the lagoon from the accommodation are spectacular, the environment is excellent and Javi, the owner, is a pro birder. In addition, the Allucant sets the stage for many diverse workshops ranging from solar cooking to celebrations of sexual and gender diversity to painting and sculpture lessons, scientific bird ringing, etc. Their role in the […]
