The first Swift Festival will take place next weekend on the 23rd and 24th May in Alange, Extremadura, Spain. Three days of an array of events and talks for everyone will be dedicated to these enigmatic birds: from workshops for children, music and breakfasts to technical conferences for ornithological researchers.
Alange is a picturesque birding liocation in near Merida, in the southern province of Badajoz in Extremadura. It boasts the presence of 4 breeding species of Swift: Alpine, Pallid, Common and White-rumped as well as occasional observations of Little Swift. It is the only town in the Iberian peninsula where one can see all 5 breeding species of swift.
This project had been supported by the Alange Entidad Mixta de Gestion Turistica, local accommodation, eateries and small companies and Onaga Birding. This initiative places importance on the conservation and tourist value of natural spaces around the town, as well as their preservation for future generations.
