Asturias, northwestern Spain: restaurant on the Villaviciosa estuary, a magnificent place for birding, above all in winter and during migration. This establishment won best fabada (white bean stew) in the world in 2012.
Within the reserve, next to the Villaviciosa estuary and 3km from the visitor’s centre where you can find info on the area.
In good weather this is an agreeable place, and when the weather turns bad, the birding gets good, above all in winter and during migration, when you can see Whooper Swan, scoters, Brent Goose, sawbills and many more.
The premises look like a northern beach bar (that is, closed) but don’t be decieved.
It won first prize for the best fabada in the world in 2012 (a five-year old competition).
Without doubt the star dish here is the fabada, but in general the whole menu is delicious.
Easy parking, a welcome respite from the increasing difficulties in nearby Villaviciosa in this respect.
Highly recommended, being able to bird the river while eating a hot, authentic fabada is an unforgettable experience.
