Catalonia, Spain: This is an essential stop for visiting the Delta del Ebro Natural Park.
Salt production, traditional fishery and the observation of birds are the three mainstays of the MonNatura Delta, made up of a number of areas of great biodiversity. The Fundacion Catalunya- La Pedrera has restored the old salt pans at La Tancada, an area of 41.2ha, revitalising the rea for wildlife and opening up areas for watching it in a series of lagoons. The observatory is a magnificent tower from which you can see the birds of the Tancada lagoons and the San Antoni salt pans.
The shop at MonNatura Delta offers a wide variety of local produce from the Ebra area, like honey, olive oil, chocolate, rice, craft beer, licqueurs, sweets and home-made ice creams. There is also a section dedicated to naturalists which stocks books on birds, flora and fauna of the area. There are also soft toys of typical wildlife of the Delta, swallow nests or straw hats.
The Delta Birding Festival is held here annually. In spite of its youth it is widely held to be the key bird fair in Spain.
