Tarragona, Catalonia: this casa rural has privileged views over the reservoir, and is a great example of sustainable renovation with respect for the surrounding area, without losing any of its comfort value. Situated right next to the Riudecanyes reservoir, on the agricultual plain of Tarragona and next to the PEIN Serres de Pradell – l’Argentina. The area is not especially rich bird-wise. The focal point is a large flock of Mediterranean Gull which comes in the afternoon during winter months (especially late Feb-early Mar). The St Jordi gulf is the principal wintering area for this species, holding up to 50,000 individuals in February- March. The gulls come to the reservoir to bathe and drink freshwater, offering a memorable spectacle as they move over the surrounding olive groves towards the coast where they roost.
