The Hostal Casa Clara is located in the center of the Alt Empordà region which is the only one in Catalunya that has three natural parks within such a large territory. It is found in the Aiguamolls de l’Emprdà Natural Park (PNAE) which is one of the best places of the Catalunya humid zones where you have a good chance of seeing bittern, great snipe, aquatic warbler, red-footed falcon, red-throated pipit or the 3 crakes (little crake, spotted crake, Baillon’s crake) in the right season, just to name a few.
The Albera Natural Park is found close by as well as the Cap de Creus Natural Park where the eastern Pyrenees plunge into the Mediterranean Sea, a great vantage point for sea birds.
A recent reintroduction of lesser kestrel at the Castelló Town Hall gives you the chance to observe these small urban raptors from the inn’s terrace.
Marga and Anna are both veteran hardworkers from Aiguamolls who now run the accommodation located in the Castelló d’Empúries old town. Details such as their naturalist library, the information they provide on where to do the best local birding, the birding guide they gift to guests who stay various nights at the inn, among others, have earned them the 49 points and the Lonely Birder Approved hallmark with 3 feathers. This is the first hostel in Catalunya that has received this distinction.
The recently remodeled facilities are welcoming and comfortable. The restaurant has an excellent quality/price value and uses many local products like wine, vegetables, etc. The daily menu is priced at 12€ (15€ on the weekends) and includes delicious dishes of fresh pasta, salads, recently caught fish, rice dishes and homemade desserts. They also offer vegetarian and Sephardic dishes. Don’t forget to try the tiramisu!
For those early risers, they offer packed breakfasts/lunches.
Casa Clara provides wonderful service, free wi-fi, a reading room, and a terrace for the guest’s exclusive use. They can arrange car and bike rentals (both conventional and electric bikes available).
