This is a hotel rural in Murias de Paredes, in the western Cantabrian cordillera. This is a magnificent area for watching montane and forest birds like Black Woodpecker, Grey Partridge as well as the Cantabrian Brown Bear.
El Urogallo (“The Capercaillie”) is a hotel rural located in the same area as Omana, León, in the western Cantabrian mountain range. This mountainous area is full of birch and oakwoods where you can see Black and Middle-spotted Woodpeckers, Eurasian Bullfinch, Tawny Owl and the last few Capercaillie. In the alpine meadows higher up you can find Grey Partridge, Red-backed Shrike and, if you are lucky, Brown Bear. In the streams and rivers White-breasted Dipper and the strange Pyrenean Desman feed. The Somiedo Natural Park is 40km away: this is without doubt the best place to view Brown Bear in Spain.
On the ground floor there are communal seating areas and a large dining room with fireplace. On the first floor, there are 4 4 doubles and a 4-bed room. On the second floor there are three attic-style double rooms. All have bathrooms and views over the valley. There are 4 extra spaces, making a total of 22. The house is surrounded by a garden which has lovely views over the river valley and birch woods.
It is possible to hire the whole house with the right to self-cater. In July and August it is also possible to book by the room.
Nearby is Caboalles de Arriba, where you can visit the Centro Urogallo (‘Capercaillie Centre’; address: C/Real, s/n. 24111. Caboalles de Arriba, León) where you can get all the information you need about the Somiedo Natural Park.
