Gujarat, western India: this is a simple lodge complex. There are all the basic necessities, suitable for a birding guest (and it is practically the only accommodation on offer in the area). There is hot water, WiFi, adaptable hours for birders and good food cooked by local people. Without doubt the highlight is the manager, Jugal Tiwari, an expert ornithologist who has been based here for 10 years and knows the area and its target species like no-one else.Three guides were on offer, the best being Jugal and also Veer who works with him. Both are expert ornithologists and dedicate their time to studying some of the emblematic species of the area. The target species for visiting birders are White-naped Tit, Hypocolius, Stolickza’s Bushchat and Rusty-tailed Wheatear. Jugal’s son Jivam is starting to guide and although he is learning, he knows all the best points for observing the target species.

It’s situated in the Ansó Valley, at the gate of the Natural Park Los Valles Occidentales del Pirineo Oscense, of the Huesca Pyrenees. This small family owned restaurant is in an idyllic location. Among the delicacies of the restaurant are traditional breadcrumbs and grilled meats. Don’t miss the steaks, they’re to die for!

Avila, central Spain: a rural hotel at the entrance to the north slope of the central massif of the Gredos National Park, by San Martin de Pimpollar village. This is close to the Gredos “Plataforma”, where you can observe interesting montane species like Bluethroat, Common Rock Thrush, Ortolan Bunting, Red-backed Shrike, Water Pipit and Skylark. Pinewoods near Navarredonda de Gredos hold Common Crossbill, Citril Finch and Goldcrest. There is a common sitting room with a fireplace which is lit over the cold Gredos winter months. There is also a dining room where you can try local dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
