CASTELL MAR & CASTELL MONTGRÍ THE FIRST TWO LONELY BIRDER APPROVED CAMPSITES

CASTELL MAR & CASTELL MONTGRÍ THE FIRST TWO LONELY BIRDER APPROVED CAMPSITES

Any establishment run by Jordi Sargatal has to be Lonely Birder Approved! These two campsites are two such places: Castell Mar is next to the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park and Castell Montgrí is in the Montgrí, Iles Medes i Baix Ter Natural Park.

This is a great example of conservation and environmental awareness- that includes camping capacity for 5,000 people! Inside the campsites there is ample evidence of this philosophy: there are nestboxes at every turn (many of them constructed by children), home to Great Tits that carefully select their boxes, there is no use of pesticides, purified water is used for the lake and even the fruit trees are carefully pruned to assure a maximum crop for birds.

Sargatal’s enthusiasm for surrounding all his visitors with the riches of the environment is also evident in the Espai Empordà Natura- Alauda restaurant. The old Jocs restaurant, next to the Castell Montgrí campsite is now in part an inetrpretation centre of the Empordà natural sparks and there is also a shop where you can by all sorts of products related to wildlife, as well as a range of typical local products.

Future plans look more than promising: more camping plots are planned in the natural surroundings, along with new nestboxes, lakes and birdwatching trails. All this is an exceptional opportunity for people to experience the nature that surrounds us all, the first essential step in its protection.

We salute this brilliant example of environmental immersion!
